Stock Cabinets: The Budget Option

Lead time: 1-2 weeks. Stock cabinets come in predetermined sizes — typically in 3-inch increments — and a limited selection of door styles, wood species, and finishes. You order them, they arrive, and they go in. They are functional. They hold dishes. The downside: filler strips. Because stock sizes almost never match your exact wall dimensions, the installer fills the gaps with wood trim pieces. Those filler strips are the tell — they announce “stock cabinets” the moment you see them. Inside a stock cabinet, you will find particleboard shelving, basic hinges that will sag over time, and doors that close with a hollow thud instead of a soft, dampened click. Stock cabinets are appropriate for rental properties, quick flips, laundry rooms, or garage storage. They are not appropriate for a kitchen you plan to cook in and enjoy for more than five years. The cost savings evaporate when you factor in replacement: a stock cabinet kitchen that looks tired at year seven costs more over two decades than a custom kitchen that still looks new at year twenty.
Semi-Custom Cabinets: The Middle Ground

Lead time: 4-8 weeks. Semi-custom starts with the same basic boxes as stock, but you get far more choices: door styles, wood species, finish colors, glazing options, and — critically — modifications. Need a cabinet 2 inches narrower to fit a tricky corner? Semi-custom can do that. Want pull-out shelves instead of fixed? Done. Want deeper upper cabinets for oversized plates? Available. The fit is better, the finish quality is a noticeable step up, and you will see fewer filler strips. For many Alexandria homeowners, semi-custom hits the sweet spot between quality and cost. The cabinets will last 15-20 years with proper care, and the interior organization options are extensive. The limitation: semi-custom cabinets are still built to standard sizes with modifications. Every inch of space is used because the cabinet was designed for that specific inch. You choose the wood species (maple, cherry, walnut, quartersawn oak, alder), the door profile (shaker, slab, inset, raised panel, beaded inset), the finish (painted, stained, glazed, or natural), and every detail of the interior configuration. Dovetail drawer joints. Soft-close Blum hardware rated for 200,000 cycles. Plywood boxes — no particleboard anywhere, even in the cabinet sides you never see. Custom drawer dividers, pull-out trays, appliance garages, built-in charging stations, hidden step stools. The difference between semi-custom and custom is most visible in Old Town Alexandria homes, where walls are rarely perfectly square, floors have settled over a century, and ceiling heights vary. Custom cabinets accommodate those quirks instead of fighting them. They are not adapted to your space — they are built for your space.
What You Are Actually Paying For
